Election 2026 · Issue

Property taxes & Town finances

An Oakville tax bill combines a Town portion, a Halton Region portion and a provincially-set education portion; council sets only the Town's.

What it is

Property taxes fund municipal services. An Oakville residential bill is split three ways: the Town of Oakville's share, Halton Region's share, and the education share set by the Province. Town Council sets the Town's budget and its portion of the rate.

Why it matters locally

Council's budget decisions determine the Town's share of the bill and what it pays for — roads, parks, recreation, fire and by-law. The Region and education portions are set elsewhere.
