Summary
Oakville has seven wards. Each elects a Town Councillor and a Town and Regional Councillor, who with the Mayor form the 15-seat Town Council; the regional councillors and the Mayor also sit on Halton Regional Council. The next municipal election is Monday, 26 October 2026.

Wards
Why do I have two councillors?
Because Oakville is a lower-tier municipality inside Halton Region. Each ward elects a Town Councillor, who sits only on Town Council, and a Town and Regional Councillor, who sits on both Town Council and Halton Regional Council.
Who is responsible for what
What does the Town do, and what does Halton Region do?
The Town of Oakville runs more than 90 local services: planning and building permits, local roads and sidewalks, snow clearing, parks and recreation, libraries, fire, transit, by-law enforcement and property tax billing. Halton Region runs police, paramedics, public health, water and wastewater, waste collection, housing and social services. The Province runs schools, hospitals, highways and the courts.
Where does my property tax go?
About 43 cents of each dollar goes to the Town, 39 cents to Halton Region and 18 cents to education, per the Town's budget basics page. The Town collects the whole bill on behalf of all three.
How big is the Town budget?
Council adopted the 2026 budget on 15 December 2025 with a 1.96 per cent overall tax increase, about $16.33 for every $100,000 of assessment. The draft budget totalled $803.1 million: $462.0 million operating and $341.1 million capital. The largest capital items were the new Central Library ($70.6 million) and land for a Trafalgar Urban Core South community centre ($38.0 million).
The totals are from the Town's draft-budget release; the adoption release restates the tax increase but not the totals.
The 2026 election
When is the Oakville municipal election?
Election day is Monday, 26 October 2026. Advance voting runs 7 to 10 October and 13 to 18 October. Nominations closed on 21 August 2026; the Town's certified candidates list shows who is running for Mayor, each ward's two council seats and the school board trustee seats.
How do I speak at a council meeting?
Submit the Town Clerk's delegation request form by noon on the day of an evening meeting, or by noon on the last business day before a daytime meeting. Written comments have the same deadlines. Agendas and minutes are on the Town's eScribe meeting portal, and meetings are streamed live.
