241 Trafalgar Rd, Oakville, built in 1870, is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by Town of Oakville By-law 1986-913 (1986). It lies within the mapped boundary of the Trafalgar Road Heritage Conservation District, but the Town records it as Part IV only.
History
Built around 1870 and known as “Potter’s Folly” after the builder John Potter, a carpenter who worked as a shipwright for William Chisholm. The building was rented to the Presbyterian Congregation until they bought it in 1881 and numerous other ministers dwelt there over the years. In 1927 the property was sold to William Robert Adamson, an active member of the Knox Church Board of Managers.
Heritage attributes
Italianate Villa style house with central third storey tower and ornate detailing. Notable features include richly detailed cornice and roof brackets, classical window and door crowns, 6/6 double hung windows and original shutters.
What the status means
Designated individually under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by a Town by-law. Alterations to the heritage attributes and demolition need Town approval.
