History

Built by William Mackenzie King, son of Lieutenant George King, who died in the War of 1812. William MacKenzie King established the first reform newspaper in town. King named the building “Solitude” but it is referred to as “King's Castle”.

Heritage attributes

Brick Gothic Revival house with tall narrow gables, steeply pitched roof, pointed windows and decorative bargeboards and pendants. An impressive landmark in the Town. Historically, there was a highly decorated verandah on the house which has since been removed.
