70 Shepherd Rd, Oakville, built in 1911, is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by Town of Oakville By-law 2009-079 (2009).
History
This property contains two houses built by the Smith family, Scottish immigrants, on what was a rural lot. Both houses are rare surviving examples of shale stone construction. Shale was taken from the bottom of Lake Ontario, known as stonehooking, between the 1830s and WWI. The first generation house was built c.1911 and a second generation house was built later in the 1930s.
Heritage attributes
This c.1911 2-storey vernacular house was constructed to reflect the architecture of the Smith family's ancestral home in Scotland. Intersecting gable roof with three triangular dormers, stone chimney, arched stone radiating voussoirs, multipaned wood windows, wood trim and wood and stone sills and lintels.
What the status means
Designated individually under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by a Town by-law. Alterations to the heritage attributes and demolition need Town approval.
