History

Built by John Urquhart (1802-1867), druggist, grocer and town councillor who was born in Scotland, and emigrated in 1830 to New York, and later to Upper Canada. This Medical Hall was a combined apothecary’s shop, surgery and dwelling. His son, Dr. John Urquhart Jr. (1844-1933) was a doctor and a two-term Oakville Mayor (1888-1891). He was credited with recognizing the first case of smallpox during the 1907 epidemic, and with setting up a camp to treat the afflicted. Urquhart Jr. lived here until his death in 1933 at the age of 90.
