Oakville has ended the 15-minute grace period for all drop-in recreation programs
Since October 1, latecomers to Town drop-in programs no longer have 15 minutes to claim a reserved spot. Registered participants in line by the start time go first, and walk-ins are admitted as space allows.
The details
What changed
The Town of Oakville removed the 15-minute grace period for all of its drop-in programs effective October 1, 2026, according to a public notice posted on September 23. The grace period had let a participant who reserved a spot arrive up to 15 minutes after the start time and still claim it. A pilot that began in May 2025 had already removed it for several high-demand programs; the Town says that pilot reduced wait times, improved access and made better use of available space.
- Pre-registered participants in line before or at the start time
- Admitted as space allows
- Not allowed by calls, messages or friends
- If a reserved spot has been given to someone waiting and the program is full, you cannot join; you may wait for space, but no refund is given
Waitlists
Where the option is offered, participants can join a waitlist for a full program. If a spot opens or extra sessions are added in advance, the Town contacts the next person by email, and that person has 48 hours to respond before the spot passes to the next name on the list. The Town recommends reserving a spot for anyone planning to arrive at the start time, and arriving a few minutes early to check in.
