Oakville's new high school at 4020 Sixth Line opens in 2027 with Grades 9 and 10

New Oakville Secondary School: the short answer

The New Oakville Secondary School is the Halton District School Board's new high school at 4020 Sixth Line in north Oakville. It opens in September 2027 with Grade 9 and 10 students only, adds Grades 11 and 12 in 2028 and 2029, and has room for up to 1,338 students. The three-storey building includes 88 licensed childcare spaces.

It does not have a permanent name yet. Public name suggestions closed on 13 September 2026 and the naming now sits with a board committee; as of 10 October 2026 the board's own page still calls it the New Oakville Secondary School, and its boundary review refers to it as Oakville NE #1 HS. The attendance boundary is already decided: trustees approved it on 5 May 2026.

How the name gets chosen

The board ran a public call for names from 17 August to 13 September 2026. From here it follows a three-step process. A committee representing students, parents and guardians, and staff reviews every submission and builds a shortlist. The Board of Trustees selects a name from that shortlist. The selected name then goes to the Ministry of Education for final approval, and only once approved is it shared publicly.

The board has not published a date for the announcement. School names in Ontario are approved by the province, so the board cannot confirm a name before that approval lands.

Which students it will serve

The boundary for the new school was set through the Oakville NE #1 Secondary School and French Immersion Review. Trustees approved Option 3 on 5 May 2026. The board describes implementation as running over a three-year-plus timeframe from September 2027, with legacy exemptions and transportation for students who stay at an existing school.

One part of the decision is conditional. French Immersion boundaries north of Dundas Street are subject to the outcome of the Northwest Oakville Elementary Boundary Review, which is still under way.

Programs and facilities

• Advanced Placement: AP Prep in Grades 9 and 10, then AP courses and exams, AP Career Kickstart courses in Business Principles and Personal Finance, and the AP Capstone Diploma.
• APEX, the Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence: a regional program for competitive student-athletes that launches at this school in September 2027.
• Technological education, the arts, and a Community Pathways Program.
• Dedicated science and technology wings, arts and music rooms, three gyms, a fitness room, a practice field and a turf field with a dome.

Transit and childcare

The board says Oakville Transit is planning service to the school for its September 2027 opening, and that routes and schedules are still being finalised. Students ride Oakville Transit free with a PRESTO card. The site sits near Highway 407.

The 88 childcare spaces will be run by an outside operator. The board says it will select and announce that operator at the end of March 2027, and that parents register directly with the operator from April 2027.

Why it matters

A new secondary school in north Oakville changes more than one building. Secondary attendance areas are large, and giving a new school a boundary means taking territory from the schools around it. The approved review names White Oaks, Garth Webb, Iroquois Ridge and T.A. Blakelock among the secondary schools involved, which is why a family south of Dundas Street can be affected by a school being built north of it.
