99 Forsythe St, Oakville, is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by Town of Oakville By-law 50.
History
The Lyon’s Log Cabin has cultural heritage value for its historical associations with the early settlement of Trafalgar Township and with the Lyon family. Originally built in the 1820s, the cabin was once part of a farm located on the east side of Trafalgar Road north of White Oaks Boulevard. This area was known as Vernerville, a small hamlet founded by Sir Frederick Verner in the 1850s on the new plank road (Trafalgar Road). Designated individually and as part of the Oakville Harbour Cultural Heritage Landscape and the Erchless Estate Cultural Heritage Landscape.
Heritage attributes
The log cabin has cultural heritage value as a representative and early example of a single room pioneer log cabin. It has a simple rectangular form with a gable roof and includes small multi-paned wood windows and two simple wood doors. The building is a physical reminder of the typical log cabin built by settlers which was improved over time as money and time permitted, and as the needs of the family changed.
What the status means
Designated individually under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by a Town by-law. Alterations to the heritage attributes and demolition need Town approval.
