2521 Dundas St W, Oakville, built in 1867, is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by Town of Oakville By-law 1978-038 (1978).
History
Palermo United Church. The church was planned and built by local members of the congregation in 1867 in what was known as Hagartown, now the village of Palermo. The church was built as a new home to members of both the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church. Methodism in Palermo first developed in 1812 when Lawrence Hagar, a prominent local pioneer, held the first service in his home. He later became a minister in Palermo. In 1900, the Sunday School Hall was added and electricity was installed in 1922. The original church steeple has been removed.
Heritage attributes
Gothic Revival red brick church with front gable roof. Notable features include arched stained glass windows, decorative bracketed wood cornice, brick voussoirs, stone sills, heavy brick buttresses.
What the status means
Designated individually under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by a Town by-law. Alterations to the heritage attributes and demolition need Town approval.
