114 Balsam Dr, Oakville, built in 1878, is designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by Town of Oakville By-law 1988-077 (1988).
History
Built for William Wass after he purchased a 100 acre farm in 1860. The house was built by master builder William Lee as the Wass’s farmhouse in 1878. William Wass was a very successful businessman who worked as an auctioneer, land and estate agent, stock and money broker, notary public, commissioner, conveyancer, accountant, and farm operator. For many years he was an acting magistrate and a leader in politics on the Reform side.
Heritage attributes
Two-storey frame house with a Georgian form and Italianate detailing. Example of the joiner’s skills at a time when mass production and mechanical decoration were becoming popular. The home exhibits flamboyant cornices, paired brackets, drop pendants, and a magnificent hood doorway supported by enormous scrolled brackets.
What the status means
Designated individually under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by a Town by-law. Alterations to the heritage attributes and demolition need Town approval.
