Kindergarten 2027 in Oakville: HDSB registration is open, and the Catholic board's open house is October 22

Who can start in September 2027

Halton's two English-language school boards, the HDSB and the HCDSB, use the same age rules for the 2027–28 school year. A child must be four years old by December 31, 2027 to start Year 1 (Junior) Kindergarten in September 2027, and five years old by December 31, 2027 for Year 2 (Senior) Kindergarten. In practice, that means children born in 2023 are eligible for Junior Kindergarten next fall. Both boards run full-day Kindergarten.

Halton District School Board

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) says registration for Kindergarten for the 2027–2028 school year is now open, either in person or through the online pre-registration form on its website. Its registration page tells families to register their child for school and then complete the Kindergarten Parent Questionnaire, online or in person, starting in January. The board also asks families to report their child's immunizations (it points to Halton's public health service or 311), and encourages them to attend a Kindergarten orientation at their school in the spring. Children already in Year 1 at an HDSB school do not need to register again for Year 2.

The HDSB's Oakville Calling All Three-Year-Olds open house was held on October 7 at Harvest Oak Public School, but families may attend any of the board's open houses, and no registration is required. The remaining sessions all run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

At the open houses, families can see Kindergarten classrooms, meet board staff, get information on before- and after-school care and from community partners, and pick up a free children's book and tote bag.

Halton Catholic District School Board

The Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) holds four Kindergarten open houses this fall, one in Oakville. The board says the sessions give a general overview of its play- and inquiry-based Kindergarten program and are not specific to the host schools; families receive school-specific details in 2027 once they register at their designated home school. The board asks families planning to attend to fill out a sign-up form, which it says is for planning purposes only.
