Oakville issued $1.34 billion in building permits through August, 61 per cent more than a year earlier
Residential permits make up $924 million of the total, up 74 per cent on 2025, and the Town's monthly tables record 1,006 new dwelling units this year. Institutional work, led by the $80-million Sixth Line school permit, is also well ahead.

What the reports show
The Town of Oakville's Building Department publishes a permit summary each month comparing the year to date with the two previous years. The August 2026 report puts the construction value of permits issued from January to August at $1,338.6 million, compared with $832.7 million over the same period of 2025 and $1,227.2 million in 2024. That is a 61 per cent increase on last year and 9 per cent above 2024.
Applications are also running ahead of 2025. Permit applications received through August carried $916.9 million in declared construction value, up from $759.7 million a year earlier, though still below the $1,236.9 million received by this point in 2024.

The residential category covers new houses and apartment buildings; the Town's reports file additions, interior alterations and similar work under other residential, which is the one residential line running below both prior years. Industrial permits are also behind 2025, when a run of large industrial projects pushed that category to $110 million by August.
New homes approved
Each monthly report includes a Statistics Canada table listing the dwelling units created or lost by every permit issued. Adding those monthly totals gives 1,006 units created and none lost between January and August 2026. March was the largest month, with 335 units, followed by July with 173 and June with 130; April, at 28 units, was the smallest.
The biggest single permit in the period was not housing: in June the Town issued a permit valued at $80 million for the new secondary school at 4020 Sixth Line, with about 14,430 square metres of floor area. That one permit accounts for roughly half of the year's institutional total.
