History

Built by Reverend George Washington, a retired Wesleyan circuit ride preacher who named it ‘Retreat’. In 1874 the property was bought by Captain Hugh Francis Pullen, a retired paymaster of the Royal Navy who renamed the house ‘Clifton’. Then sold to Thomas Walsh in 1883 who renamed it ‘Rosedale Villa’ and ran it as a boarding house. In 1900, the property was sold to Captain G. H. Morden, founder of the Morden Line of steamers and in 1943 the house was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Downey, gladioli growers.

Heritage attributes

Regency style cottage with open verandah with decorative posts and a doorway flanked by two sidelights. The mansard roof was added in 1878. The structure was moved within the site in the early 2000s to make way for a new subdivision.
